Two weeks already past and I experienced a lot of new things. Last week was the hardest week of my whole studies so far. We started to do many different projects, workshops and career preperations.
But something very awesome happened last week, I got in to the "Intermediate Voice Over" Workshop. Three weeks ago I saw the add for the workshop. I already tried to get in to the workshop before but I never got in. But then I thought, I can't loose anything, why not trying again. So I went to the interview and I realized that it was a intermediate course where I needed to bring some knowledge already. I told them that I misunderstood the add, but they still aloud me to be a part of the interview and one day later they told me that I got in. Yesterday we had our first professional voice recording. This semester we focus on radio presentation and radio plays. I attend once a week at this workshop from 7pm-10.30pm, which makes a very long school day. But it's worth it!
Also we prepare our resume and on Sunday evening we will visit the photographer meet-up at our school to look for our favorite photographer, which we will choose to take our headshots in august. I am very excited to see all the different photographers and to see the different qualities and prices. We already saw a few prices, so I was very happy that I got the job at school, that I actually can afford the pictures and my rent.
Tomorrow, Saturday, I will first ride my bicycle to school where I will rehearse a scene of Shakespeare and after that I have an accent workshop and later Stage Combat training. After we will go to the public pool in Hollywood to get out of school for a bit. After that I will go home to memorize all our new scenes.
Through all the new projects and my job there's not much time to recover anymore, I am always very tired and almost fall asleep at school, but then in the evening I am totally awake because I think to much about what I have to do the next day. But the first time in my school career I don't mind it. It's more the opposite way, sometimes I have to make myself to do something else and taking a break, even if it is for a little barbecue at my hostfamilys place or for a Ginger Ale or Starbucks Strawberry Green Tea at the Grove Mall.
I am back in Los Angeles and already started into my second week of school. As I took a semester break to get some money, I am now in a new class and I guess they are very nice. But there are also two colleagues from my last class, which is of course even better.
It changed a lot. Not just my class, but also that I live now in the beautiful West Hollywood. It is not the same at all and I can't believe, that I actually paid before for one room with three people in Hollywood itself more then now and now I got this beautiful guesthouse in the back garden. Also I could put some money to the side, as I now go to school by bike. I drive 8 miles per day. I don't like riding the bike that much, but I guess that's what I do to not spend more money then I have to. I borrowed the bicycle from a friend of mine in Studio City.
I also got new teachers, which are really great. Also in Stage Combat I have my teachers back from my first semester, which makes me very happy, as they are very competent and focused. This year I also have a class with famous actors from "Honey, I shrunk the kids", "The Office" and the choreographer for all the Stunts in "Resident Evil".
Also I have very interesting new classes as "Audition Techniques" and "Career Prep." in which we get prepared for the business. That's why I also will take my first headshot pictures this semester to prepare a setcard for my future, which I will send to agencies, and I guess that is going to be very exciting.
Now I enjoy our day off (4th of July, national day) and tomorrow I will learn new things again.
Finally I stood in front of the camera for a big production as a background actor. Besides great weather, the beautiful city of Bern and a lot of funny background actor colleagues, I could gain some more experience on a filmset. This time it was for a big swiss film production called "Mario" which will be in swiss movie theaters in October 2018.
I am very happy that I can do projects like this and like this I feel a lot more prepared for my third semester which starts in June.
Also I found a great solution for my living situation. Thanks to someone who was frequently reading my blog knows someone in the US who has a guest room for me and that means that I pay 400 CHF less rent. Thank you again Sibylle Schwyter-Romer for your great help.
I wish you all a great Sunday evening.
Today I thought it is time to make a little update about my studies. For the next three months I am still working as a medical assistant, which still let me some time off to work on my projects.
Two weeks ago I was finally on set again. I worked for a swiss series called "Seitentriebe" where I could be a background actor. It was a very great experience and a good chance to see behind the scenes of a bigger production. Also I got to know the directors and my background actor colleagues. The series will be showed on swiss national TV in October 2017.
Other then that I am looking for an apartment in Los Angeles, which would be a lot cheaper then to live in the dorms. But it isn't that easy as it works a lot more unorganized then in Switzerland, but somehow it will work out.
Today I also applied on the castingwebsite 451.ch, where I hope to get some more great projects and getting some jobs as a background actor, supporting or lead actor.
I will keep you posted and I wish you all a nice easter.
It's done, this week I ended my first year. Right now I am waiting for my grades, but I have a good feeling about it. Tomorrow I will finish everything here and then I go buy some bags of M&Ms with peanut butter and almonds and travel back to Switzerland. I will work as a medical assistant for four months to get some money together. Also I will ask some institutions for scholarships.
The most important to me is to find some acting projects back home too. I already submitted for some projects (shortfilm, studentfilm, crimeserie) and I wait for a feedback. I will keep you posted about all my projects and I hope I get some news too.
I wish you all a great weekend.
My two weeks of vacation are already over and I started well into my 11th week of school at my second semester. As I have still five weeks left before I take my semester break to go back to Switzerland to work and getting the money together for the next year, I feel a little weird because I don't know what to expect. But I also will need again some scholarships, which is not always easy to get, but I will not give up, until I findd an institution who will help me to finance it.
Now we already prepare our end of this semester with presentations and exams, which makes me totally focusing on school again. Also we got our grates and some meet-ups with our teachers to talk about our grades etc.. I was very happy about my results and the feedbacks. But I also had to realize that Walz isn't one of my best dance abilities, but I do really like Line Dance, but that doesn't mean neither that I am good at it. ;-) Also I am very surprised that ballet works better then other dances even I don't have the body strength for it.
Other then that I like all of my days and in all the acting classes I make a lot of improvements. Tomorrow in Acting for Camera we will film either a comedy or horror movie... I hope, that I get a horror movie, because I think that could be very interesting to film. We will see... Stage Combat works out for me, but sometimes I feel very depressed after some lessons, because I feel like I am still not good enough in it. But like this I rehearse more in my free time and sometimes even in the late evenings or at the weekends.
Other then that nothing much changed, just that it rains a lot now. ;-)
I wish everyone a delayed New Year and see you soon!
The first part of my second semester is almost over. The time just flies by and I can't find anytime to do anything else then school.
But let's start from the very beginning. After the successful first semester, I took a one week break where I had time to see other people, which was very good to get out of the school bubble. But also this week past by very quick and we already started school again, which doesn't mean anything negative at all. Because honestly, I love everyday here at school. It makes me happy to learn new things and it doesn't let me miss my free time. Of course, on some days like today, when you were at school for 13 hours, work and rehearsals you wish for a free evening. But it is also very exciting, because in weeks like this, you get a lot further with your knowledge. Our rehearsals are very successful and it makes a lot of fun to be on stage. My accent gets better and better and with a lot of work I can have an american accent for a whole monologue, but it needs a lot of practice and patients. But still the most exciting thing for me is Stage Combat. Now we started sword fighting and we feel like fighters in "Lord of the rings" or in other fight movies. Now I realized that I will take Stage Combat in my 3rd and 4th semester too and work hard to get a diploma so I am an official Stage Combat Fighter known by the American Fight Academy. I thought a long time about it but it got so clear that I want to do this.
Next week we start our next midterms, which will be again a very stressful time, but also we are soon having the christmas break where we can relax for two weeks.
Lovely greetings from the sunny, but still "colder" Los Angeles.
It's done. Our successful first semester is already over.
Last week we already had our written and practical exams. It was very interesting to see, how much better we all got in different classes. Especially in VPS (Voice Production Speech) was very obvious, that everyone of us were talking a lot more clear then before. In Stage Combat we had to learn a choreography in a team of two and had to perform it in front of two other classes. It was a lot of fun, even I got killed in the end. ;-) Also did we had to perform our monologues again and we got graded after. As my scene partner didn't participate in the classes I had to change my partner shortly before. But it actually was easier then I expected, because our class really works together. Because everybody already has a lot of work, I felt bad to give someone even more work. In Acting for Camera we had to film a scene and I got good feedback, which helped me a lot, because during the last weeks I didn't had a good feeling about it. I was always to nervous. But that changed somehow and I actually did the best performance of my whole first semester.
But my biggest compliment this week I got from our oldest teacher Stu Levin (over 90 years old) in Film Survey. As I told him that I was very thankful he gave me a note back which said:
"It is I who should be thanking you, you are one of those student who inspire me to continue working. Your reports have been consistently insightful.".
This week we also had to perform "Sundown Beach" with all my classmates. It was very interesting because you could see how different you can act it. This was very helpful and interesting for our start in to the acting business.
As longer as I am here, as more obvious it gets that it was the right choice to get here. It always gets easier and it makes more and more fun. I really like getting up and going to school, what I definitely couldn't say about me before. ;-) But each day is even more interesting then the one before, because every day I learn something new.
Now I say goodbye to the stressful week I had and then I am very ready for my second semester.
Now we reached the 10th week and the first semester (15. weeks) is almost over. The time passes by very fast and I am happy to learn everyday something interesting. Also my american accent is improving day by day, which takes a lot of work. Sometimes I feel like a little child, who needs to learn to speak and how to move the tongue to the right spot. There are days where you see that it isn't impossible. Today I successfully did my speech exam in my voice production speech class.
But my biggest interest is still in all acting classes and of course stage combat. The stage combat classes show me every time, how much you actually can achieve if you put the work into it. I almost didn't had any body tension and I couldn't box at all. But after ten weeks of hard work and big interest from my part, I was able to show a realistic fight.
Our exam will be out of 15 different components, which are kicks, pushes and different fall techniques. Also the reactions are very important, which for me is the hardest part, to really make them looking real.
The acting classes are very different which makes the learning process very varied. As we learn mostly different games in improv to improve our improvising, in acting foundations we make a theatre piece, which everyone from our class plays a part of, which we showed last week to other students and teachers. Very interesting is also the class, acting for camera, where we make a shortfilm, which we review afterwards with the whole class, to see what we could improve and what possibilities would we have to make it look as real as possible. We are always aloud to bring our personalities into the shortfilms so it is very interesting how different people look at it.
Now I will go back to my speech exercises and hope to write soon about my experiences.
Already I have ended my first half-semester. The time just flies by. Last week we had midterms, which shows us where we're at with our knowledge and acting. The last two weeks were very hard, but it paid off. Even I was practicing dance until 1am, whole weekend studying my monolog or doing homework and reading books until 2.30am everybody finally did a great job at the midterms. What I really like about our small class is that we're kinda are like a little family, with some exceptions. Even if it is sometimes really hard, it shows me every week that this is the right way I took and that it will pay off and I will give everything I have to reach my goals.
After this really tough week I could relax the whole weekend. We did a hike to the hollywood sign to see Los Angeles from the top. It was very hot (the whole walk direct on the sun part) and it also took very long, as we were people from different countries and I guess hiking is different in some countries. As we finally arrived on the top, everybody agreed, that it payed off to hike up the hill. Even we had about four hours instead of one (for one way).
Now it got a little more quiet and we can really focus on our classes, without not getting enough sleep. ;-) Now I hope that I will get my social security card next week, that I can work officially at school.
I will write again as soon as possible!
Lovely greetings from the sunny LA.
